Styles P, Jadakiss, and Philly’s own Gillie Da Kid and Spade-O hit the TLA stage Friday to turn Philly up a notch or ten .I had a moment to catch up with Kiss and Styles before the show started and see where they’re at in life.
And I want every single one of you to pat me on the back for maintaining my cool [aka "my G"...in wannabe-thug terms] as I interviewed two artists who fueled my love for hip-hop growing up. My mom probably would have slapped me twice, one for each of them, had she heard their lyrics though.
Anywho, before we jump into the interview just a quick note: Kiss has already confirmed Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown and Rick Ross for his new “Top 5, Dead or Alive” album.
SS on the Scene Interview
JK: Top 5, Dead or Alive album almost finished. The new Lox album quarter of the way finished. You know just work. Juicebar: Juices For Life. Website: SoRaspy.com. [Looks at Styles] What’s your website?
[Styles stops to think about it.]
[chuckles about his lapse in memory]
JK: Yeah, you know. We hustling, we out here!
Career Thus Far…
SP: We’ve had great longevity so we’re at the point where we just appreciate
doing what we love. We appreciate people appreciating us. This is what we do! We MC’s.
JK: We just keep it true to what we do. Keep going. They’re getting a real piece of authenticity. Authentic shit.
State of hip-hop…
SP: I think the game is alright. Everything goes through changes. There is a lot of bubblegum stuff, like you said, but there’s also a lot of MC’s…like J. Cole just dropped, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Meek…it’s a bunch of young dudes spitting. So it’s definitely a lot of bubblegum shit that you hear out on the radio, but if you hip-hop, if you live hip-hop, it’s what you live, it ain’t what you hear on the radio all the time or what’s mainstream. You search out for the real shit; find it, support it, love it.
Currently listening to…
JK: Beats. We’re listening to beats right now.
SS: So are you looking for people to submit beats?
SP: Um, I hope God takes care of him.
JK: [Makes sounds: ‘blicka-blicka-blickaaahhhh’] to Zimmerman.
Number one lesson learned thus far…
SP: Stay humble to be humbled.
JK: Do a lot of praying.
Philly Love…JK: They’re real lyrical in Philly so they appreciate artists such as us.
