I first saw poet and teaching artists, Ms. Wise, perform over two years ago at West Chester University’s campus. I remember being stuck to my seat, unable to move as I was sucked into the performance that she delivered with such ease and rawness. From that moment on I kept up loosely with her work, events and performances. That trail eventually lead to her performing at the Live United Summer Jam held in LOVE Park, curated by the United Way of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey, Tabb Management and myself.
So when I learned that she had joined forces with FlyGIRRL, Artists First, Inc. and influential poet/activist, “Just Greg” to produce the “late night poetry & soul series” at Warmdaddy’s [YUM!], I made sure to attend.
If you don’t know, Kai Davis spits bullets.
Memories of her use of vivid story-telling paired with her frank [and sometimes even shrewd] delivery added a little more pep in my step as I strolled in to the restaurant that evening. My tummy received Warmdaddy’s soul food with open arms [as always]; and the line-up, which consisted of “Tyree the Poet“, Mydera “SpeakMeFree” and “Brotha Ray” had me looking forward to what [and who] is to come next in the series.
And speaking of what’s to come, you can check the next Speak Easy show out for yourself on Sept. 27th. Be sure to bring an appetite for good food and great word play.
