JulianKing_Mentor21) How did you first meet Julian King and what was your first impression?
We met Julian about 5 years ago now, in our studio.  We were introduced to Julian through an artist we used to work with. The moment he began to sing we knew his beautiful voice would be a perfect canvas to make a masterpiece with, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite the right time for us to work together.  A year later we ran into Julian again at a Grammy Event we attended and the rest is history.

2) What makes Julian King different in today’s music market?
What sets Julian apart is that he’s a triple threat: He sings, he dances and he plays multiple instruments.   It’s rare that you find an artist that’s the total package. Another unique part of Julian is his authenticity–his view of the world and love and life. When you are true to yourself, you will always stand out. The brightness and strength of Julians voice is a big factor as well. He just shines through onJulianKing_Mentor1 every record. It rare to find a voice like his.

3) What is your most memorable Julian King moment?
The most memorable artist moment for us was definitely headlining his first official show at Underground Arts. It was our first full-out show on him and he did not disappoint! He brought the house down.

4) In a perfect world, where should Julian King be in 5 years?
In 5 years we’d like to see Julian at the top of the game.  We see Julian ushering in a new generation of artist who will carry the torch that Usher and Chris Brown are carrying right now for young classic R&B artists.

ARTIST Q&A: Julian King

Julian King is an emerging singer/songwriter/musician that is breaking into the industry with all the momentum and execution of a well-oiled machine. Born in a military family, King moved frequently but cut his musical teeth in his birthplace, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As an alum of the acclaimed Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, King shares a similar foundation with such notable graduates as Quest Love of The Roots, R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan, and the legendary harmonizing quartet Boyz II Men. King went on to attend the University of the Arts where he graduated with a degree in Vocal Performance. Like many other musical greats, King grew up in church; it was there that he cultivated his love for music and the arts. During his time at the University, King joined Grammy U (A community of college students who are pursuing careers in the recording industry) and the Recording Academy- Philadelphia Chapter where he was able to network and rub elbows with some of the music industry's movers and shakers. Now under the direction of Twenty 20 Entertainment and Mama's Boys Entertainment Group Julian King is on a fast trajectory to be the next world class entertainer from Philadelphia.

1) What makes a great artist mentor?
A great artist mentor is extremely patient. They are knowledgeable and willing to help you grow, naturally. A mentor pushes you, challenges you, and no matter what, has your best interest at heart. I’ve found that, and more.

2) What is the best advice your mentors has given you?
The best advice I’ve been given is to enjoy the journey. A lot of times a new artist can get very impatient and frustrated. Over the years I have learned to enjoy my journey.

3) What is the greatest success your mentors have helped you achieve?
The greatest success we have achieved together is finding a unique sound and building a catalog we are all happy with. In my opinion, that’s the biggest part of being an artist, and sometimes it takes artists years to find that special sound. I believe this will save us time and money once I get to the next level.

4) In what area(s) has your mentor helped you grow the most?
My mentors have pushed me to be comfortable with songwriting, and also not over thinking song ideas. I’ve become comfortable with my ideas, and it’s been a vital part to the growth and development of the unique, Julian King sound.

5) What advice would you give to an artist seeking career guidance?
The best advice I feel I can give to artists seeking career guidance would be to study as much as you can on your own. Do anything and everything you think you can before you seek guidance that way your mentor has something to work with. Listen and watch, before you are ready to jump. You can’t build a house if you don’t first have materials. and you can’t have mangers without something to manage. Stay focused, study as much as you can, and lastly, surround yourself with the movers and shakers because you’ll learn a lot  by seeing and hearing more.
